A word from our President
Welcome to the latest EMG update. As we race towards the end of 2024, this edition covers many events for your calendar. Life’s too short, The Johnston Collection, A BBQ at the library and the annual East Melbourne Christmas party. On a more sombre note I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Nat, Ella, Lily and Kate and the wider Vander Sluys family on the passing of Simon. I will miss the catch ups at Bedggood’s for a cup of tea, the social events, the banter, the story telling, and most of all, the wonderful friendship.
Your hard working committee met last Monday. We thank you for your ongoing support of the EMG. We recognise the important role the EMG plays in advocating, representing, and bringing together the of East Melbourne community.
Cheers for now Greg B | |

East Melbourne Neighbourhood Network Oaks DayGeppetto Trattoria was the place on Oaks Day. More than 30 ladies and gentlemen dressed for the occasion sipped Champagne on arrival. An authentic Italian feast followed … focaccia, home made pasta puttanesca, huge prawns or tender veal. Fabulous desserts followed: tiramisu, pannacotta, gelato. Our waiters Adriano and Diago arranged the menu and proudly brought the food and wines to the tables. Geppetto has always been a favourite and now it is extra special to us.

Community ConcernsCars in George and Simpson Streets have again had tires spiked and various road signs have been knocked over. Police are aware and conducting patrols. The suggestion that CoM be approached to install CCTV was discussed at the November EMG Committee Meeting. The committee agreed we will first seek community input first via a meeting in the library with representation from Police and City of Melbourne early next year.

Vale: Simon Vander Sluys The East Melbourne Group is saddened to advise members of the passing of much loved and respected member Simon Vander Sluys. Simon was a tireless contributor to the East Melbourne community. An ever present volunteer, you would always find Simon helping out at a BBQ or setting up and packing down from an event. Simon understood the importance of community and embraced altruism. Always up for a chat, a great story teller, a dedicated and much respected leader and loving husband to Natalie and father to two wonderful girls Ella and Llly and brother of EMG member Kate. The EMG would like to express our sincere condolences to the Vander Sluys family.
