A word from our President
Welcome to the latest EMG update. Your committee met on Monday 11th December. Below are highlights from our meeting and items that carry over from previous News. Having just run Library Christmas last Saturday and Xmas Drinks Tuesday the Social Subcommittee lead by Deborah deserves and gets special thanks as we join the EMNN for Sunday at Bishopscourt. Put the EMG AGM in your calendar, Monday 17th March.

Pedestrian CrossingsThe East Melbourne Group has been engaging with the City of Melbourne Transport engineers regarding the planned rollout of safety upgrades to roundabouts at several intersections in East Melbourne. Community Police have arrested a person in reference to tyre damage over the last couple of months. more here | |
Heritage and Planning
A planning application for 5 apartments on the vacant block at 79-84 Hotham St has been lodged. Twenty two objections have been lodged and the EMG will support the neighbours in their objections. see here
Redevelopment at 1 Clarendon Street (St Hilda’s – former Police Association building) is being considered. Proposed is demolition of the 1980’s addition at rear and replace it with a four storey residential building. see here The committee agreed to ask Trevor Westmore (Planning Consultant) to review the documents. A decision will then be made about our position should a planning application be lodged. | |
Art in the Park
EMG committee member, Jessica Agoston Cleary, together with Dr Simon Maidment (former curator of contemporary art at the NGV) are making progress with the development and delivery of a temporary public art and sculpture festival. Called ‘Intersect’, the 10 day festival will take place in Treasury gardens and the city side of Fitzroy gardens and will present a unique and diverse selection of site specific artworks by local and international artists, encouraging the community to engage with these cherished urban gardens in a new way through art.
‘Intersect’ is planned for November 2025, after the Melbourne Cup and Spring Racing Carnival. Having received the support of Melbourne City Council, Jessica is establishing a charitable trust to run the festival and is seeking the support of art lovers in East Melbourne.
