EMG 72nd AGM 17th March

As reported byJessica in Inner CIty News: "With a packed room at the East Melbourne Community Library, a touch of theatrical flair, and a few superhero references, the evening was a reminder that East Melbourne is no ordinary suburb – it’s a community with a cause." here

Sixty of the 535 members of the East Melbourne Group attended.

Jessica Agoston Cleary, Shelley Faubel, Anne Graham, Luke Martin, and Andrew Walpole were elected/reelected to the committee.

The meeting was followed by three guest speakers from City of Melbourne Council…

new Lord Mayor , Nick Reece

new Deputy Lord Mayor, Roshena Campbell

Councillor Rafael Camillo

They complimented EMG as the longest serving neighbourhood group in the metropolitan area and a group that works to promote and protect the heritage of the area, actively protests inappropriate development of sites and property in East Melbourne, and supports social interaction and care for residents.

They also spoke with enthusiasm of MCC works in progress around East Melbourne. They answered many questions from the audience about traffic flow, parking, speed cushions, speed limits, private security, major events at MCG and more. A delicious supper  donated by several local residents followed the meeting.

Geoffrey Borrack

Geoffrey Borrack died on 18 March.  He was a long term resident of East Melbourne and an architect involved in many development in the suburb. He was a member of the East Melbourne Group. He commenced the Albert Street Residents Association as a splinter group when EMG refused to support opposition to a development which he opposed. He produced with Winston H Burchett a book called East Melbourne Walkabout published in 1975.  Winston Burchett did the text and Geoffrey Borrack did the drawings.  It is still an extremely useful guide to East Melbourne. more here

Heritage and Planning

A compulsory conference has been set down for the Police Association planning application Re: 70-75 Jolimont Street.

The Police Association have applied for a permit to use levels 4 and 5 of the building and the roof top terrace for a place of assembly and as a function centre from 8:00am to 2:00am.

The City of Melbourne have indicated that a permit will be granted for them to have functions on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 am the following day with the outdoor areas vacated at 11:00 pm. The number of persons not to exceed 320 people in total,  ,including a maximum of 60 people in the outdoor areas. Council has included conditions to limit noise: a glazing system on the doors, noise limiters and no music or public address system including background music from external speakers after 11:00pm.

We believe the Police Association have appealed the proposed conditions and seek longer hours, including greater use of the outdoor areas and fewer noise restrictions. EMG and others have also appealed to VCAT.

There is a compulsory conference at VCAT listed for 30 April between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm to see if a compromise position can be reached. If this fails, then on 29 and 30 July there will be a two day hearing.

Your EMG Committee has committed $5000 to support an appeal against this intrusion on the peace of our suburb with a further $5000  dollar for dollar matching to support action by directly impacted residents
